Mel,
If you believe your desires are of the Lord then you need to trust in them. They will come true without any effort. Any couple that has gotten together got that way because the Lord was in it. You sighted Adam and Eve, and I agree with you--they only had one another. However, if the Lord is not in it, confusion will be all around. Things will be "forced" if you will, and it'll be like nothing is going right or "clicking" so to speak. I felt this way when I went through this--I tried and tried and tried to no avail. However, I found that the Lord wants to bring me the one. If you believe strongly that this will happen then you need to trust that the Lord is not the author of confusion. Things will happen when they are supposed to and you won't have to try.
He wants to bring you that person you are meant for--it's obvious to me that you aren't meant to be alone if the Lord put that desire in your heart. I think your mother is just concerned because she doesn't want you to end up unhappy. That's why she has given up and why she wants you to move on. She loves you and just doesn't want to see you in tears all the time. You're her baby and she is going to be protective of you. It's obvious that you were hurt by your ex when things did not work out and now she is going to be protective--she probably won't think highly of him because he's hurt you before. It's not that she's not trying to understand--she just loves and cares about you and wants what is best for you.
Mel, my advice to you is for you turn to the Lord and ask Him what He wants for you--ask what His will is in the situation. Sometimes we all get caught up in what we want and we miss out on what the Lord wants which is far better. If He wants you to be with your ex then there is nothing to fear in asking for His will. I realize it's a scary thing to do, but I think it needs to be done. I had to do that at one point--I had to take a risk and I know that I am happier for it. I ask that you try--I know it's hard, but I think you will have a lot more direction than if you simply keep asking for what YOU want. I know it helped me in my situation.
Also, ask for an open heart--I think that sometimes we get too caught up in the situation and we cannot see what we need to. We become biased for what we want--but the Lord is trying to show us something different. He'll show you the way if you just ask.
Mel, I know you may not believe it but I do know what you're going through. I prayed for six+ months trying to get my friend to fall in love with me--claiming to give up if it didn't happen. However, I found that was not what the Lord wanted for me. I don't think He wants me to repeat the process over and over again. I've asked that He only send me the person He wants me to be with now that I've had a lesson through this experience. I know that He will answer my prayers and that the next person will be the one. I'm glad however for the person He sent me who first broke my heart. Although it was hard, at least he was a kind considerate person--one who is my friend to this day although we never got together. He is someone I care deeply about and I have found a new love with him that is much better than what I had before. Before, when I was "in love" with him, I was unhappy. True love should not make things worse...they should be better. Now, I am happy that he is my friend, that we stay in contact--in fact, he's one of my BEST friends.
I remember before then crying all the time--at least once a day. As I have stated before, I didn't even want to go on living, because the pain was so great. However, the Lord brought me through that when I finally submitted to His will. I remember thinking that moving on was a bad thing--and I remember asking myself, well then, if this wasn't meant to be then why was he sent into my life? Perhaps he wasn't for you, but he needed to see something in your life. Maybe the Lord worked through you as a witness for Christ--maybe He can still be that. However, a relationship may not be what the Lord wants for you. Remember, the Lord is infinite and what He sees isn't what we do--I think my friend was sent into my life to teach me what love is and what it is not so that when it finally comes my way I will recognize it. Also, I think my friend was not only sent for my benefit. My friend, unfortunately, has no goals in life and he seems to be just spinning his wheels. However, I've seen an influence on him for Christ--he asks questions, he has a deeper interest than maybe he had before, and the Lord is really working in his life.
I'm not saying necessarily that that is what the Lord's will for you. However, I think you need to seek Him out in the situation. Get down and ask what He wants rather than focusing so much on what you want. It's obvious that He must know by now. The Lord understands what you are going through--think of how He loved the world when He gave Christ. One of the things I thought about when I had been rejected was that Christ gets rejected everyday by people He offers His love too, when they decide not to get saved. They would rather live in their own sin and filth and go to hell than spend eternity with Him. How much does that hurt? I thought my personal rejection paled in comparison.
Think of what you have to be thankful for and remember, even if it seems like it, you are NOT ALONE.
