RE: pain
You're right, it is hard. I had to cut off someone from my life, more than once. In fact, I cut him off after he reconnected with me this summer, because he was not saved and still doing the same things that have always hindered our relationship. And, though it's been difficult, the Lord has taught me a lot along the way and I thought I would share what I've learned and maybe help you in the process.
You have to trust that the Lord knows best. We all know we're not supposed to be unequally yoked with nonbelievers, but we don't always see the problems that come from it. Like for me, I stayed friends with this man for a long time and eventually, I compromised my witness for "love." While my feelings were true, his eventually proved they were not. We had an ugly argument and I had strayed so far that I presented a very poor witness. Though I've apologized, I'm sure it hasn't been erased from the back of his mind. Before we had dated, he had gone to my church and had even been confronted with a very convicting gospel message. When he didn't get saved, I gave up and compromised to get what I wanted: his love. I didn't want it to be that way, but ultimately it was.
I'm not saying you want the same, but it could come to that point if you continue to be connected. It's hard not to. And, ultimatums also do not work. If you confront him that you're not going to date him unless he takes Christ seriously, he may give a false confession just to pacify you and earn your love.
My recommendation would be to get deep into prayer for wisdom on this situation and to pray perseveringly for his salvation. Give it to the Lord, because He can reach him and send him someone who can reach him much more than you. Perhaps you could call your pastor and ask him to visit your boyfriend? He may not get saved right away, but it could save you some heartache.
I hope this helps. I don't mean to be negative, but I think you have a right to know the facts. I'm still reaping results of a very bad decision and hopefully, you can be wiser than me.
