While you agreed to assist someone, you endangered your family to do it, you should repent. We are admonished to pray, give, but never encouraged to lend. When you have the resources you may give, however when a friend is in need, and your resources are low, you may pray for God's Assistance, or direct them to a bank, or other secular source, but do not lend. This situation shows how even "Well meaning" can be used by Satan to hurt, steal, and kill (reputation, friendships); remember we are not God, we don't know the heart, or the reasons all problems, exist.
